Nature fascinates me. Rusted old boats, hinges, and trucks intrigue me. I see the old steel drum, empty of oil or what it once held, and the combinations of the paint colors mixed with the rust on the outside thrill me. Paint peeling on an old barn door mesmerizes me.  Lichen growing on the side of a tree on the Blue Ridge Parkway makes me grab my camera to take as close a photo as I can to capture the tiny individual spores.  I am so drawn into the complexity of these things and the possibility of figuring out how to recreate them in fabric/fiber, that I have to try.  It drives me.

In my attempt to replicate the feelings I get from these wonderful inspirations, I generally choose to create them in one of two styles.  For my Mixed Media style, I incorporate paints, beads and found objects in my art. I enjoy combining fabric with metals such as copper, bronze mesh, copper wire, etc. in a variety of ways to suggest aspects of nature such as a cat tail or a stand of reeds beside a bog.

My Thread Paintings are developed by free motion machine embroidering (that means no computerized embroidery images are used) designs that are more photo-realistic.  While creating these designs I use miles  of thread as I build several layers to blend and highlight my picture.

Creating art quilts allows me the freedom to interpret my love of nature and utilize my skills and ingenuity to do so in a variety of ways.
